“Next Gen Ensemble”

We embrace the traditions embodied in this music. And, it is our mission to facilitate the perpetuation of traditional music in inspiring ways and in a safe, creative space for those of all ages, walks of life, and abilities. That’s why we’ve introduced the “Next Gen Ensemble” to our offering at Great Lakes Music Camp.

What is the “Next Gen Ensemble”? Who is it for?

This track is tailored to those 18 years of age and under who want the experience of attending Great Lakes Music Camp but wish to have dedicated time with peers and world-touring professional musicians during the weekend.

This is your chance to collaborate with your peers, challenge yourself by learning original music from some of the finest acoustic musicians in the world, and then performing these pieces at camp with the instructors! This is a unique and rare opportunity that we are honored to offer. Adaptations will be made for very young players, and those of varying levels of experience as needed.

How does it work? How do I sign up?

It’s easy! Students can choose to attend the full weekend of GLMC 2024 or register for the Saturday/Sunday Only Package (for those with limited time, etc.). You can attend all the normal classes, jams, concerts, meals, and workshops. Each day you will see a time slot dedicated for the “Next Gen Ensemble”. These 90-minute class periods will be facilitated by Nate Roberts and Bob Phillips along with up-and-coming educational leader, Keala Venema. Joining them will be three artist/players in residence at the camp: Jeremy Kittel, Hayes Griffin, and Ethan Setiawan. This team will collaborate with you and the other students on arranging their original tunes and all the fun stuff that comes with being in a band!

Who can apply for a Youth Scholarship? How do I apply?

  • 8-18 years of age
  • Submit a short (400 word or less) essay and include information on why you’d like to attend camp, what instrument you play, how long you’ve been playing, and what you hope to learn from attending
  • Submit application by September 1, 2024

Please email your essay to and title the email YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP (your name)

Additional Scholarship Funding Available!

Scholarship Resources & Funding

GLMC partners with several organizations throughout Michigan equally committed to the preservation of traditional music. Some of these organizations offer programs, grants, and funds to students with income restrictions. To learn more or apply visit Wheatland Music Organization at FILLABLE.pdf

We encourage all parents/guardians and youth to consider completing the Wheatland Music Organization’s Scholarship application as well. This is NOT required to receive a scholarship from GLMC, but this fund helps us offset the cost of our scholarship program and is a great way for us to collaborate with one of our favorite community partners, Wheatland Music Organization.
